Is top gun Maverick a perfect movie?
. blow is my first ever official movie reviewed
spoiler-free.
One thing is for sure it is a perfect sequel to Top Gun. After 36 years waiting for a movie I never expected and didn’t know I needed. Top gun flies past my expectations. And believe me, my expectations were high enough that I feared being disappointed even if it was a good movie.
It seems like many producers/directors of sequels do not know why the first film caught “lightning in a bottle.” This is one of those rare exceptions. In so many respects, this movie soared to higher heights than the original.
This film managed to honor the original while being unique and truly having something to say.
And re-captured what is magical for me about going to see a movie in the theaters; similar to how I felt when I first saw Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters or Top Gun. This film has reignited my love affair with the silver screen.
Top Gun, Maverick has all the right feels: in one moment, laughing out loud, then as fast as an F 18, swinging the other direction. Maybe saying it’s a perfect movie is hyperbole, but I left the movie wondering how could it be improved upon. And after some reflection, there is one area where the first Top Gun clearly outperformed the second and that would be in the music score. In Top Gun Maverick the score only stands out when it borrows from the original; otherwise, this score neither stands out nor detracts from the film.
I generally don’t like to over-inflate expectations for a film for those who have not yet seen it, however, if you’ve seen the original and loved it, this movie cannot be overhyped. I think if you haven’t seen the 1986 Top Gun, you will still enjoy it, but you will not feel the same about this movie as those that have. You may even feel like the movie drags in the beginning as it tugs on our nostalgic hearts. To appreciate this movie to its fullness, go see the first movie, and it wouldn’t hurt to see the documentary, “Val” as this added a more emotional punch and as this will undoubtedly be Val Kilmer’s last film.
If this movie wasn’t in your plans to see, then change your plans and go see this in IMAX or Dolby: basically, the best movie theater you can find, as the aviation cinematography is outstanding and is the perfect summer blockbuster in my opinion.
