The Hawkline Monster, a fusion novel by Richard Brautigan, can be regarded as a half western, half gothic with comic elements. Two main characters are mercenaries/hired gunmen, so they can’t be morally tolerable at the first place, but they’ll be more acceptable when we advance more into the words. The creature will add the comedy into the storyline. The things it has done and things it will do. It’s shadow is so cute and obedient which can make anyone pity it. His sacrifice for the residents is also the heartwarming part of the story and I really admire it. The ending at the other hand is too optimistic where all the bad things will turn into the good, it kinda harms the storyline. Also the monsters destiny after is too good to for a western/gothic novel and it also injured the novel’s drama. Character’s destinies were more realistic than the monsters destiny and it kinda compensates the fanciful’s part of ending. Although Cameron’s destiny can be considered as an another fanciful part of ending.
After all it was a great experience reading another novel by Richard Brautigan who is one of the greatest American novelists ever. After reading his masterpiece, Trout fishing in America, I was eagerly interested in reading this novel and it almost gratified me.
