Came to this one expecting a fun and stylish mix of horror/thriller with queer romance and was pretty frustrated with what I got. I wasn't particularly shocked by the tub scene that many reviews talk about, but what did get to me was how mean spirited this movie felt. Not just in the sense that the characters were cruel to each other, but the whole tone and story felt cruel to the characters - and the audience.
Everyone gets less and less sympathetic and the twists are more frustrating than thrilling. Saltburn dredges up a lot of old, tired tropes about bisexual men and ends up being way less critical of the class system than it should be. The lighting is gorgeous and the performances are strong, but it's in service to an ugly vision of the world.
