This movie doesn't try to replicate that feeling from the first Matrix of wondering what "real" is. While it's an important theme throughout Resurrections, the core thematic element (and antagonist) is emotional manipulation. The film explores the power that be can generated from keeping people apart and the ultimate realization that love is the only thing that can overcome it. Topical due to today's polarization and comedic enough to be palatable for how tired we are after the last 5 years, Matrix Resurrections is a tale about waking up to the distractions that keep us away from the things / people that fulfill us. Brilliantly progressive while being careful to not anger more conservative, "sheeple" minds (albeit with the inclusion of one line about people not wanting change because they're comfortable), this movie has more to chew on than just its action scenes.
