A U.S. citizen who was arrested on two different job sites by immigration officials last year was detained for a third time last weekend after again showing federal officers his Alabama REAL ID, his lawsuit alleges.
Leonardo Garcia Venegas, a Baldwin County construction worker and U.S. citizen, alleges that on Saturday, federal officers “violently detained (him) without asking any questions.”
A spokesperson for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Last year, Venegas was arrested twice simply for “being at work,” his federal lawsuit, filed in October, claims. He alleges that before each of the three detentions he showed officers his REAL ID and told them he was a U.S. citizen. He was repeatedly detained anyway, his suit alleges.
On Saturday, Venegas was detained for about 15 minutes outside of his house in Silverhill, said Jared McClain, his attorney with the Institute for Justice, a libertarian civil rights law firm.
