A report released March 31 on California’s deadliest known avalanche offers new details about the events leading up to the tragedy, including actions the group may have taken that put them at risk. It also notes that some victims were wearing avalanche airbags — devices designed to improve survival — that were never deployed. The report, compiled by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center and the National Avalanche Center, reconstructs the Feb. 17 backcountry skiing accident that killed nine people. It remains unclear whether the slide was triggered by the group or occurred naturally. “Many of the details surrounding this accident and the events leading up to it remain unknown,” the authors wrote.
