This fish knows its own face. The bluestreak cleaner wrasse (Labroides dimidiatus), a small coral reef fish that eats parasites off other fish, passed the mirror test – something only humans, great apes, dolphins, elephants, magpies and a few other animals were believed to do. Given a parasite-like mark on its throat and then a mirror, six of nine fish tried to scrape the mark off within two hours, some in about 30 minutes. And in photos, it recognizes its own face – not its body.
