¿Qué ocurre cuando los sistemas de salud occidentales intentan comprender prácticas medicinales indígenas sin reducirlas a sus propios marcos culturales? Este estudio longitudinal de ICEERS siguió durante un año a 264 personas occidentales que participaron en retiros de ayahuasca guiados por curanderos shipibo en la Amazonía peruana. Los resultados mostraron mejoras significativas en calidad de vida, descentramiento psicológico y ciertos rasgos de personalidad, con un 91,7 % de participantes reportando beneficios duraderos y una incidencia mínima de efectos adversos. Pero el estudio también plantea algo más profundo: el paradigma de la «Salud Mental Global Simétrica» (Sym-GMH). Una propuesta que defiende un diálogo recíproco y no extractivo entre la medicina tradicional indígena y la psiquiatría occidental, en lugar de apropiarse únicamente de sustancias o técnicas aisladas de su contexto cultural. A new study led by ICEERS researchers followed 264 Western participants for twelve months after attending Shipibo-led retreats at the Temple of the Way of Light in Peru. Results show sustained changes in personality, quality of life, and well-being, with minimal adverse effects. One of the most striking findings: the percentage of participants with high neuroticism dropped from 39.8% to 28.6% over the course of a year. Four in ten people who arrived carrying a high negative emotional load had measurably reduced it twelve months later. Más de medio siglo después de su aprobación, los convenios internacionales que regulan el acceso a las medicinas tradicionales siguen funcionando como si los pueblos que las custodian no existieran. Un estudio reciente reconstruye con miles de documentos de archivo cómo se decidió clasificar la DMT, la psilocibina y la mescalina en el escalón más estricto de control. La conclusión: lo decisivo no fue la ciencia, sino el pánico mediático, las lealtades de la Guerra Fría y la ausencia de defensores económicos. The 1971 Convention is still the backbone of global legislation on access to traditional medicines. But a recent study, based on thousands of documents from the UN archives, lays bare something uncomfortable: the decision to classify DMT, psilocybin, or mescaline as some of the most dangerous substances in the world was not made on scientific grounds. What proved decisive was something else: media-driven panic, Cold War geopolitical loyalties, and the absence of economic defenders. In the rooms where the fate of ayahuasca, psilocybin mushrooms, and the coca leaf was decided, there was no representation of the Amazonian, Mesoamerican, or Andean peoples who have safeguarded these medicines for centuries.
