After more than 30 years, they're finally home 🦏 Endangered black rhinos have returned to Zimbabwe's Matusadona National Park for the first time in decades. The animals are descendants of rhinos that were rescued and relocated during the height of Africa's poaching crisis, when more than 90% of the continent's black rhinos were killed. Conservationists hope the reintroduction will help rebuild a healthy, genetically diverse population in the Zambezi Valley. The project is the result of decades of work by government officials, conservation organizations, local communities, and park rangers to bring the species back to the landscape where it once thrived.

Cats apparently leave their own little calling cards wherever they go 🐱🔬 A new study found that every cat has a unique mix of chemicals called branched-chain fatty acids in their urine. When researchers introduced cats to urine samples, the animals became less interested as they encountered the same sample repeatedly — but perked up again when a new cat’s sample appeared. The findings suggest these chemical “fingerprints” could help cats figure out exactly who left a scent mark behind. Even more surprisingly, scientists traced the chemicals to unusual fat droplets in cats’ kidneys that have puzzled researchers for more than a century. The team thinks these droplets may act like reservoirs, helping each cat maintain its own recognizable scent profile over time. Similar features are also found in big cats like lions and tigers, opening up even more questions about how this chemical communication evolved.

This tiny bird’s comeback just got even more promising 🐦⬛ New Zealand’s Chatham Islands black robin was once reduced to just a handful of birds. Now, years of conservation work are showing encouraging results. On Mangere Island, 10 females were relocated in 2022 to help a heavily male-dominatedpopulation. Five breeding seasons later, the island has 39 adult black robins and a much healthier balance of males and females. Eight chicks also fledged during the latest breeding season. Meanwhile, the population on nearby Rangatira Island has grown from an estimated 253 birds in 2011/12 to around 340 today. Researchers say the findings will help guide future habitat restoration, translocations and other efforts to keep this remarkable recovery moving forward.

Meert Brisket Billy 🐾 His story started on an Alabama highway, where this 6-year-old, 43-lb beagle/pointer mix was found and brought to New Orleans. A microchip scan led to an owner who didn't want him. Brisket Billy didn’t let that slow him down! He’s a playful, dog-friendly and goofy guy who's always ready to ride shotgun for a fun adventure. He soaks up attention like it’s gravy on Thanksgiving and loves everything (except cats). Brisket Billy is available for adoption through Take Paws Rescue in New Orleans.
