Small plea to anyone building an SEO tool with the DataForSEO API. Please don’t call it an “Ahrefs/Semrush killer” on day one 😂 I get it. Marketing matters. You need a hook, you need attention, and ambition is a good thing. But there’s a point where confidence starts getting ahead of the product, especially when the harder parts around proprietary data, differentiation and ICP haven’t really been solved yet. There are levels to this game.

I had an interesting conversation with someone recently. Them: “I want to get into digital analytics. Do you think it’s a good sector to be in? I want an honest answer because I’m thinking about this as my career for the future.” Me: “With the speed AI is improving, I don’t think traditional digital analytics is a particularly safe long term career bet. If you learn how to use AI to speed up this work you might be able to keep your position. But, i cannot guarantee this. Companies simply don’t need as many people as they used to. A smaller team, using AI well, can already do a lot of the work that previously required a much bigger team.” Them: “Why are you being so negative? You’re not giving me any hope.” Me: 😐😐 You asked me for an honest opinion about a decision that could form the next 10 or 15 years of your life. I can give you my honest opinion. Or I can give you the answer that makes you feel good. Sometimes they’re not the same answer. Lessons learned: Next time I will keep my mouth shut and pretend like I don't know anything about this space.
