As someone who grew up with Nancy Drew, has the complete collection of books and has read them all... from the 70's, as well as watched the series that came out in the late 70's...I can say that this modern adaptation is nothing like the books, plots, relationships, or characters. Such a disappointment. There is nothing wrong with a series like this...but don't call it Nancy Drew. Make it something that is new and stands on its own, rather than trying to modernize, meddle in, and remake a beloved wholesome sleuth and storyline. I could enjoy that. The original had nothing to do with the actual paranormal. It was spooky in that many of the mysteries had that element in the beginning, but Nancy always uncovered the plot at the end..which had no ties to the supernatural. Carson Drew, Nancy's father, was a highly respected lawyer who had a wonderful relationship with his daughter. In this series, he is not even her real father. He is embroiled in scandals and their relationship is strained to the say the least. Nancy was seeing Ned Nickerson..not "Nick". He was not a convicted criminal with a dark past. George dating Ned after Nancy? Just no. Bess was a plump blonde who was George's cousin and not a kleptomaniac lesbian and expert in the spiritual realm. They were all close friends and not constantly in revolving relationships and being possessed every other episode as portrayed in this CW series. Hannah Gruen was the Drew's beloved housekeeper and a big part of Nancy's life when her mom died. She is not even in this series as such. I think there was a brief nod to a Hannah Gruen character in season one, but she worked at the historical society. Nancy's home life was stable and happy. In this show, it is anything but.
Solving a mystery per episode or two part episode, like the books, would have served much better than an on running paranormal, woke plot that swallows up the whole season. For those saying people should get with the times and accept the radical/ woke remake changes aimed to a younger target audience...I say, then please do get with the times and create your own new, original heroine super sleuth series and fan base for it...don't look to the past then, and hijack a beloved character of the past and remake it into something completely unrecognizable to fans who grew up with Nancy Drew. A remake doesn't have to be woke, sexualized, and unrecognizable to be a hit. You already have them a dime a dozen CW. People are starving for wholesome alternatives. A remake of Nancy Drew that closely stuck to the original series could have been a huge hit. If you are going to change it that much, then change the name too.
