Take my words, this one has substance, glory and beauty-everything in true Bhansali style! But the film is not just visually beautiful, it roars depth and passion be it the story, screenplay, direction or performances...So, just take a break, get through to the nearest multiplex, relax in your seat and get ready to witness one of the best period-romance dramas ever made!!
Boasting of visually oh-so-extravagant sets, incredible performances, impeccable story and perfect screenplay, Bajirao Mastani is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's labour of love and his ode to global cinema. Strong actors thrown in a midst of challenging situations is a common fare in Cinema. But believe me, the thankfully gripping screenplay and strong performances make this one a must watch.
The film follows the lives of Bajirao, his wife Kashibai and his affair with half-muslim Mastani. Set in 18th century India, the film has an interesting premise of a historical. The film does lose steam in the proceedings but one-of-the-best-climax-sequences-ever-made-in-Indian cinema totally makes up for it.
Coming to technical values, every scene in the film depicts grandeur at its very best. The film's music is pleasant and poignant at the same time and makes up for a good album. The screenplay is gripping, mainly in the scenes of high-octane family drama between the male protagonist and his family. The costumes are top-notch and perfectly set the mood of the film.
Now, the performances-The film tells a course of romance of the male protagonist. But, Deepika performs her Mastani so ethereally perfect that the film is carried on her shoulders! Also, add to that, she looks so stunningly beautiful and as those golden doors lift, she walks in as poised and elegant as if she is Mastani herself. She breathes life in to the role with effortless ease and proves why she is the best Bollywood actress around!
Brimming with Maratha gleam and glamour is our Ranveer, who does his Bajirao exceptionally well. But, he is outperformed by Deepika in every single frame. He deserves a special mention for his portrayal as a warrior in the battle sequenes.
Kashibai, portrayed by Priyanka ends up being so much in the background but she outshines both the protagonists when required-that is, when the scene belongs to her.
Add to this list, Tanvi Azmi, who performs her mother role so exquisitely perfect!
Verdict:Add this to your must-watch list. Generally, historical and period-dramas are overshadowed with a tagline-Boring and endlessly long!
But this SLB's film is a break from the convention. This film is so interestingly woven and has an engaging premise to get going! So, non-lovers of history, just visit your nearest theaters and history lovers, just watch the film right away!!
Bhansali, take a bow! Because your film is a perfectly crafted masterpiece!!
