I came to New York in the 90ies with my family in search of opportunities and while I look absolutely nothing like any of the characters, don't speak a word of Spanish, started out in a different borough at the end of a different subway line, the immigrant experiences portrayed in the movie were relatable and recognizable to me to the very last detail. We too had our own neighborhood abuela who babysat the kids after school (cause nobody at the end of that subway line could afford a nanny), a gossipy nail salon, and car service owners whose kids went on to the elite high schools and universities. The super was known to accept bribes for roof access. I even own hand-embroidered heirloom dinner napkins which I still can't afford to dry-clean. This movie did for me what no politician, influencer or Olympic game event was able to do lately. It reminded me what American dream was all about and why we all came here in the first place.
