Avoided watching it when it came out. I imagined it was like a sitcom, which I couldn't stand. Turned out to be anything but when I eventually did (watch it). Great for the actors' incomes. Didn't do a lot for me. Lot's of talk. Others say very very good for and of it's time scriptwise and culturally... This is the kind of film you watch to confirm/affirm something about your cultural values and norms. It was a time Australia was still searching for an identity... a mythical, elusive element, that exists but is not representable in film.. This film comes close to finding bits of it. The directing and very adroit casting, seemed to have a lot to do with the success. Good; not for me.
