Okay. So in comparison to the musical, it is definitely not up to standard. But there are definitely some pros!
1) Accents. What. Is. Going. On. Some are French (thank you Mme Giri) but most others are either American, British, Italian or something else! There is no consistency whatsoever.
2) Singing. So most of the singing is good in its own respect but the voices are just not powerful enough to support the roles. Take Sierra Boggess and Ramon Karimloo. Golden pair for Christine and Phantom. Powerful and still full of emotion. The voices in this film whilst full of emotion, really lack the power necessary for this role. (As a general whole not all the actors)
3) LYRICS. WHY ARE KEY LINES SPOKEN?!! Not sung? The rhymes just sound really stupid and cringe when spoken.
Etcโฆ.
The pros!
1) stunning visuals. Considering the limitations of theatre, I think the production of this film really brought out what was intended in both the book and theatre. Iโm going to specifically point out the Masquerade scene as just. WOW. Stunning. I also really like the rafters that were utilised. Very clever.
Of course, everyone has their own opinions so take this with a pinch of salt (is that how that phrase is used?)
