So as an ardent Thalapathy fan I was as excited to watch this movie as everybody else. The 4 AM celebrations in Bangalore were insane. It increased the hype for this movie to a different level. Even though the team didn't do much of promotion before the movie, the last two days were filled with unnecessary interviews and giving away too much information that was not required. It started off with something which looked promising and gripping, but very soon it became more of movie that just dumped some masala moments one after the other in the name of fan service. There was nothing original about it. It was like seeing the same thing we have seen for years -the same sentiments, the same jokes, the same punch dialogues, i understand that this was done intentionally for the fans, but it really did not live up to the expectation that I went with for the movie. Venkat Prabhu has really disappointed us with this one after making such a mind blowing movie like Manadu. The story was average at best. The de aging was pathetic. The music was unbearable. The only reason this movie can run is for the stardom of Vijay. He has truly killed it with the acting. He carries the film on his back throughout the movie and this for sure is a one man show. The story writing is extremely lousy. It was exactly like watching reels for 3 hours straight. There's absolutely no connect between scenes. Random things just keep happening one after the other. No proper back story. The villian was the worst pick. I wish they picked someone with more of a personality. Mohan was far from the right choice for this. His character development was so poor. Infact there was absolutely no proper reason as to why he's the bad guy. Things were left unexplained. Songs were so badly placed. Unecessary comedy in places it shouldn't be in. The lack of good music and background score made it a total disaster. The vfx was bad and it looked like a green screen was used for most of it. The last issue was that there was absolutely no relation between the movie and the title. Genuinely expected so much more from VP.
To sum up, I went in thinking it would be thupakki on steroids but it turned out to be a varisu with a pathetic and predictable story.
My inner self wants to highly recommend skipping this one but you need to watch it in the theatre for the love of seeing thalapathy on screen for the second last time. My two stars are only for thalapathys effort to try to pull something like this off. There was so much potential for the makers with a multi-star cast. But at the end it was just a wasted opportunity. Trying to move on by hoping that Thalapathy 69 gives us the closure we need.
