Listen carefully……
“Heartbreaking ","Devastating”, “Unforgettable" these are the reviews written on the cover of this book. When you finish reading this book that’s what you'll feel and mind you this book will make you cry. Khaled Hosseini beautifully articulated the life of Afghan women post and pre-Taliban regime but what is interesting about the story is the situation of women outside Kabul is pathetic be it before or after the war.
The story is about two women Mariam jo and Laila jo struggling in their own daily lives with their own problems and own perception about themselves, but their lives cross each when Laila being an orphan after the mujahedeen’s killed her parents ended up being the second wife of Mariam's cruel and indifferent husband Rasheed.
The first two parts of the book are about Mariam and Laila's different life situations and heartbreaking circumstances , while the third and fourth(ending) parts is about when they meet each other in hostile circumstances and become life support for each other fighting this cruel world of war-torn Afghanistan .
The parts that really touched my heart were
1. The beginning when Mariam feared that if she went outside Kolba too far way people will shame her being a Harami, someone below their status which cannot be accepted by their city. Everything that her Nana told her turned out to be true about men , we feel it so many times by the ending of the book.
2. when Mariam jo was finally taken to the Ghazi Stadium for executing under the act of killing her husband.
This part really broke my heart because I really wanted a happy ending for Mariam after all her sufferings, she accepted her whole life . It really breaks my heart to feel that she suffered most of the moments in her life with some guilt and regret still within her.
She lost her mother , betrayed by her generous father(she thought he'll support her after her mother's death),suffered with her cruel husband who reminded her the 'harami' tag she had , never had her own children ,spent the whole life in a place where she never wanted to be in , humiliated in front of Laila(Rasheed's second wife) , finally ended up being executed so brutally in front of thousands of eyes .
3. The letter about guilt and regrets from Mariam’s undeserving father Jalil , that letter touched my heart .Nothing is worse than dying with such level of regrets with no one to blame but yourself.
From everything that I've written about I think this book deserve all the love and sympathy :)
