7.5/10 After reading so many scathing reviews I was concerned, but actually I was pleasantly surprised. There were real glimpses of the visceral mutant team that was the hallmark of the rebirthed Claremont/Cockrum Xmen... and even without Wolverine! I was concerned it might not carry enough emotional resonance to make us care about Jean's fate, but i was surprised to find the team's descent into ever more vicious battle tactics, just to survive and to keep each other safe, kept things compelling. While we never quite got Jean's loss of control to the maelstrom that is the cosmic phoenix force, there were some nice moments of glee if not wild abandon. In all, I'm glad I went to see it and I came away pleased that this culmination felt so different to Marvel's 10 years of movies...Dark Phoenix is dark, it's chock full of mutants; people have been saying, "it's no Endgame", but why should it be?!
