"Businessman Fred Staples (Van Heflin) is plunged into the rough-and-tumble of office politics at his new job when he discovers that he is meant to replace the decent but ailing vice president." ....... AILING!! .. Really?.... He was an alcoholic. Today this would be no longer be accepted at that level in an organization. Many scenes in the movie definitely did not leave it to the imagination of the audience that this man was a serious drinker including affecting his relationship with his son. None of the reviews I've read even mention this. Maybe keeping in mind The Human condition of alcoholism while watching the movie will put a different perspective on what you get out of it.
