What a wasted opportunity to dig into a very serious, and REAL problem of our society: elderly abuse under a "legal" umbrella. As most of the reviewers noted, the start is promising and engaging. You're led to think that the movie is a sharp critique of a sick, corrupted and revolting system that rips off the elderly's rights and properties. You do hope that the character Jennifer Peterson will find her way to outsmart not only the greedy and unscrupulous Marla, a "court-appointed legal guardian", but also a criminal "legal" system. Well,..nope. It doesn't happen, by contrary, it develops into an absurd and pointless narrative, which basically really downgrades the real problem. It's incoherent, leaving you with the uncomfortable feeling that you actually watched 2 different movies. The second part is so ridiculous and unrealistic that you might think that the real issue -the elderly abuse via a legal system- is fake too, which is unfortunate. There is a New Yorker article written by Rachel Aviv that the director mentioned as a source for his inspiration ( really!!? In this case he badly missed the point)-- an article that investigates in depth this horrifying reality...People need to know. At least, this movie made me research the topic.
