Shortly into the movie, it casually slides past the fact that the premise for the movie is the mutilation of an unborn baby as it almost conveys that removing the brain of the unborn child and inserting it into the barely-alive mother, who jumped off a bridge w/ the intent to kill herself & her unborn child, somehow makes sense? Thus begins the journey of the selectively-compassionate-sociopath & ever-evolving Bela Baxter, a character that embodies all of the hedonistic raw animal impulses that tear apart the fabric of civilized culture & she acts on them throughout the movie. This chronically impulsive dynamic is what moves the film along from one short story โadventureโ into the next. The beautiful visuals seems to offer a balance to the cringy & gory reality of the story that is being told & what the subliminal messaging suggests. One of those being that removing the brain of a human being & replacing it with a different one(even a goatโs brain if itโs a โbad guyโ, not to mention senselessly killing a man & a goat to do it) as an acceptable practice. Where the man with a goat brain is made to be a light, comical solution to dealing with a bad man. Showing Bela as a character who overcomes her condition has its charming moments as she matures & evolves into a more conscious, well-rounded being, where by the end she has become mentally proficient in several ways with a somewhat gift for gab. Glorifying her sexual prostitution escapades I guess is to show her liberation & freedom? Not sure what value there was to the story with her prostitute friend performing oral sex on her, but it made the cut?
In short, this movie seems to be a debasing force on civilized society. Belittling those who hold romantic notions while highlighting, and seemingly rewarding and even encouraging, the narcissistic tendencies of Ms. Baxter. With the final scene playing as an affirmation and approval of whatever she has done to get herself to where she ended up. Implying that she too will continue making more unnatural people such as herself. Relegating human beings to little more than โthingsโ. And things are there to be played with by โMen(& women) of Scienceโ.
