This movie had very little to do with the blitz and WW2. It was about a kid that gets sent away, jumps the train like an idiot, and then gets into varying types of Les Mis and Dickens-type of troubles. The scenes had little cohesiveness - more a string of un-related events. There is no action taken by anyone (except George jumping the train) that affected anything else. I give it a 1 star for plot.
The scenes with bakeries full of sweets and women all dolled up seemed out of place, not to mention that everyoneโs clothes and hair was perfect. The few scenes of bombed out buildings were appropriate, but they looked like what youโd get from asking AI to draw it. No contrast between unaffected areas, and very little human artifacts. I give 1 star on costuming and scenes.
There was little time and attention paid to how anyone sacrificed and dealt with the war. Very little depth to anyoneโs relationships. And 99% of the characters were unflinchingly awful and flatly irredeemable. 1 star for character development and writing.
Overall, it was flat and empty and I feel robbed of the 2 hours I spent watching it.
