Mark Schultz character is 10% Mark Schultz and 90% the dumb, unimaginative and boring viewer. He’s the lens in which the director shows the viewer the plot. Otherwise it would be a movie about a generally accepted boring subject, Olympic wrestling and mental illness. Since Mark Schultz is colorless and dull, the viewer is forced to paint with the director’s brush allowing the director full control to be the artist. This is a movie about control. On many levels.
