If you like movies that are basic, boring and effortless, then Tall Girl is a great movie for you. The plot, the acting, and the message straight-up sucks. This movie will make you fall asleep, do not watch as it is awful.
The film takes place in New Orleans where we are introduced to Jodi Kreyman (Ava Michelle) who is a 6 ft 1 inch, 16-year-old high school girl. Ever since she was little her sheโs been insecure about her height and her dad even thinks she has a medical problem. She is frequently being bullied by everyone at school and her best friend Fareeda (Anjelika Washington) keeps telling her to not care. Another important character is Dunkleman (Griffin Gluck). He is also one of Jodiโs best friends and he often asks her out but she is refusing because she doesnโt want to date anyone shorter than her. A foreign exchange student from Sweden named Stig (Luke Eisner) has just transferred to the school. Jodi takes a liking of him immediately and she thinks that finally, this is the one guy she has been waiting for. However, Kimmy (Clara Wilsey) (who is also Jodiโs bully/enemy) also starts to take a liking for him and starts showing him around the school. Jodi doesnโt know what to do and then proceeds to tell her older sister Harper (Sabrina Carpenter) about this problem. Harper says that Jodi has no chance with him, but that doesnโt stop Jodi. Dunkleman is aware of Jodi having a crush on Stig and is sad when he finds out that he will be staying with him. Jodi comes over to Dunkelmanโs house in hope of getting closer to Stig. Kimmy finds out about this and thatโs when the situation starts to escalate.
First of all, the plot is ridiculous, confusing and boring. Itโs cheesy, predictable and not thought through at all. Throughout almost the whole movie I could tell what was going to happen, and it was not interesting. The writers really didnโt put any effort into it and it was just like every other boring movie I have seen. It was like they only changed the names of the people. Kimmy is your basic mean girl like in every other movie. She has been bullying Jodi since they were little. Big surprise. And of course, when Stig comes and is the hottest guy in the school, since Kimmy is the prettiest, of course, they just have to date! See? Itโs basic and just like every other boring teen movie.
In addition, the acting is fake and effortless. Ava Michelle (actor of Jodi) is boring and uninteresting. She puts in no effort whatsoever; in her voice and actions. Furthermore, Clara Wilsey (actor of Kimmy) is overdramatic and annoying. Her acting is fake and you can see right through it. None of the actors are putting in any effort, and thatโs just making this movie so much worse than it could potentially be.
Lastly, the message the writers wanted to come out of this just went in the wrong direction. They were trying to get out the message like in The Greatest Showman, where they are telling you to be yourself and love yourself, but instead, it just became too general and it was too much about the height. Also, how many people really struggle with being tall? They just werenโt able to really grasp the idea they wanted. Big failure. Also, kids can take the message of this movie as 'Always make fun of tall people'. We don't want kids to take away this message! Kids can also feel that they should be ashamed of themselves for who they are. Thank you movie!
In conclusion, this movie is dreadful. The plot, acting and message of this movie is just straight-up bad. Do not watch. I repeat do not watch. According to the movie, being tall sucks. Do you know what else sucks? This movie.
