One star reviews gain more attention than five star reviews. This film has a large amount of both one star and five star, but not many two - four stars, and I think that is very telling.
There are people who are upset about the film being labeled a sci-fi instead of a documentary. There are people who are upset the film didn't provide a step-by-step process on how to solve world problems. There are people upset by the graphic images and videos, and people upset that the film didn't touch on every atrocity and tragedy happening around the globe right now.
The film is a blend of sci-fi storytelling and investigative journalism from polarized nations throughout the world. It's marketing and appearance tricks us into thinking it is a futuristic, dystopian story set in 2073, and then it gut punches us with documentary film and journalism about authoritarianism, tech wealth and the dark reality of A.I data collection. Do you think that the same people giving this film one star would have selected it from their home feed had they known what it was really about? Or do you think that maybe that was the point.
There is a common theme among reviewers that the film is politically biased and polarizing. That the videos of world leaders ordering the slaying of people based on status, religion, ethnic background, wealth and "general appearance" is too graphic, misleading, political, leftist agenda, and "not sci-fi".
This film deserves more than one star. It evoked discussion. It made us uncomfortable. It challenged our beliefs. It provided commentary from real journalists. It showed us a potential future based the state of humanity right now.
It told a story of a woman living in a futuristic world devoid of culture, music, safety, love, community, human connection and freedom. That is science fiction. That is speculative fiction. That is why this film did exactly what is was meant to do. That is why it is great.
