What do you get, when you let a filmaker from Taiwan adapt a classic English novel? When the script is actually written by an actress, who also happens to have the leading role? When the actors are quite older than their characters, and almost none of them is particularly attractive? Well, believe mIt or not, you get a masterpiece! Because the director is Ang Lee, the script was written by Emma Thompson and the British cast is all stars. No candy eye performers, no kisses, no sensuality, but the perfect combination of talent, and music, and photography, and locations, and ACTING. The way Ang Lee caught the English spirit in the manners, and the landscapes, and the tea hidden everywhere just shows what a brilliant director he is. And the performers are ALL simple perfect. You may forgive and forget that Emma Thompson was in her thirties, and not a teenager, because she actually nailed every gesture and emotion in every single scene. So, in one Word: Superb!
