Yet another reminder to not be swayed by the highly overrated reviews from critics. While the acting and cinematography was excellent, the writing was just that lackluster to bring it down to 1 star. Never in my 32 years of consuming movies/TV shows have I been so disappointed that I finished watching something just to see if ANYTHING substantial at all happens.
It was written with about as much depth as a reality TV show. There were loads of awkward, mundane interactions between characters with a couple of jarring moments. One could tell a better story about picking up groceries.
Some claim it to be an "art" film or a period piece. The typical conversations, struggles and emotions were deliberately written in the way that they were for the setting. However, it was written FAR from artistically. There is no "ah ha" moment, zero symbolism, no deeper meaning and no substantial revelation to be found unless you happen to have the emotional range of a chimpanzee which would explain the highly overrated reviews from critics. This movie keeps you waiting for anything significant at all to happen and it never delivers. Just another forgettable, tragic, dark comedy done in another lousy Shakespearean manner.
