I loved this book and love everything written by Towles. He sucks you in from the very first sentence. Whether it’s Russia, NYC or France, he’s an expert at putting you in the decade, city, circumstance. Always engaging, with a sense of humor and an occasional unexpected twist.

I gave it a 4.7. I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the wonderful writing which really put you into the atmosphere in India. My only complaint was the length of the book which dragged a bit in the middle. However, the characters were fascinating and the way he showed that everyone is connected through generations as the waterways around the town were all connected.

Bringing David Copperfield to modern Appalacia, Kingsolver brings the ongoing challenges of child poverty, the child welfare system, prejudice, opioid addition to current Appalacia in the same way that Dickens expressed his passion for dealing with the some of the same issues. It is a masterful novel in which Kingsovler’s talent and compassion shine through.
