SPOILER: This movie came so close to being a modern Paradise Lost, but then lost its backbone at the last second!
Many people seem to take issue with the second act, stating that it was confusing, but I had no trouble following it; my only issue is that it starts to explore the deeper issues of Paradise Lost (mostly whether humans really have free will since God put them in a position that He knew would lead to them sinning,) but then it lost its courage at the last second when Lomax decided to drop his client. (They tried to take a middle road by having him then succumb to the temptation of celebrity, but that was even sillier than the inspirational ending a few moments before.)
The only change needed to complete the picture would have been for Lomax to go back into the courtroom and successfully defend the pedophile again. Because he had come in and kissed Mary Ann, telling her it was all right now, winning the case a second time would beg the question of whether he ever really had a chance at a redo in the first place.
