In my opinion, the best sci-fi trilogy in gaming but better than they have ever been. Legendary Edition is the best way to play these games just for the sheer convenience and the overwhelming abundance of content in it with much needed visual and technical improvements. Each game is around 30-40 hours long so you will get your money's worth even at full price. Here are my pros and cons for each games:
Mass Effect
Pros
- the most improved game in the trilogy, which was necessary considering how dated the original is in terms of visuals and gameplay
- Lifts are faster now
- in my opinion has best and most cohesive story
- quest are non-linear and have more varied outcomes
- Mako drives slightly better now...
Cons
-... But I still do not like the Mako
- Combat is not as refined as the next two games.
- the RPG nature of the game can get overwhelming at points
- some of the squad mates are either not well fleshed out until the next game or just plain boring (looking at you Kaiden)
Mass Effect 2
Pros
- has the best cast of characters in the series
- the most visually interesting game in the series in terms of atmosphere
- combat is a huge improvement from 1 but not as good as 3's
- the Suicide Mission at the end is amazing
- quests are shorter but well paced, with great character development
- Lair of the Shadow Broker is one of the best Dlcs ever
Cons
- it's focus on characters results in a very unremarkable story
- the RPG elements were strip down way too much
- quests are not as varied with options and outcomes like 1 is
Mass Effect 3
Pros
- has the best combat out of the three
- has more RPG elements than 2 but not as overwhelming as 1
- successful in evoking the theme of war and desperation
- has a more focused main story and pace with tons of strong character moments
- Citadel DLC is amazing fan service galore
Cons
- Dialogue options feel much more limited
- majority of the smaller quest are annoying fetch quests and are placed erratically across the main plot
- journal interface is horrendously backwards from 1 and 2, which makes the aforementioned fetch quests irritating to do
- some of the assets you acquire does not make a huge impact on the outcome even though they feel like they're supposed to (e.g. Leviathan DLC)
- while not as bad as I remember it, the ending is still pretty weak
