When I was buying this game I was confused about the reviews and if I should buy it. I don't get why there's so many bad reviews but I'm gonna say it's 1 of 2 really stupid things. It's either a bunch of die hard fanboys of the originals crying that it isn't a duplicate of the old games with a continuing story. Or it's FN computer generated junk.
But if you want an honest opinion from a long time gamer who played the original DA games sparingly, but loved the Mass Effect games and has played a ton of JRPGs over 32+ years as a gamer, read on. Cause I'm definitely no fan boy of the originals and I'm damn sure not a fuxxing bot.
So the story is good. Solid. It isn't box office smash good. But it's a classic RPG style story that ties in multiple characters to a followable and sensible story that keeps the game moving forward. Can't complain. Could you want more, sure. But I've enjoyed tons of games with worse story than this by far.
The character/companion stories do seem a little drier than the old school mass effect original trilogy characters, that I can admit. More on par with ME: Andromeda than ME: 2. And again, that's still totally fine. It still weaves a good enough story together to keep the game moving forward in an interesting enough way.
The combat...well I was never into action RPGs from the get go. JRpgs were more my thing. Tactical RPGs. Things like that. Never liked devil may cry or God of war. But the combat is no where near as combo/beat em up heavy as those games, and is more reminiscent of something else I played recently, the FF7 remakes. Some basic physical attacks that help you build towards stopping time with a radial menu to cast the spell or ability you want. It works. It's not bad in any way. Im into it enough at times that I even forget and try to grind xp, that it isn't a jrpg, cause it just feels natural to the game style. I'm not into action RPGs but the combat is still fun and even deep enough in a way to keep it intriguing and fun
Overall it's a good game. If you're expecting the next baldurs gate 3, well, it isn't that. But that is OK! Cause just like with movies, there are plenty of good ones that come out even if there's only ever 1 truly generation defining film every 8, 9, 10 years or so. Well it's the same with gaming. Not everything can be Baldurs Gate (or for movie analogy, say, 1976's Star Wars) that transcends generations for decades to come. But that doesn't mean you can't still really enjoy some good games all along the way until you find that next generation defining work of art to play. And that's what this game is. It's just a good game to play. And you'll enjoy it if you stop listening to this bratty bot generated reviews. Just buy it, play it, and you'll enjoy it well enough. Promise you that.
