This incredibly moving tale is a must read for anyone who thinks Stephen King is a pulp author whose work lacks literary merit. The story is simplicity itself. A traveling salesman with a hobby of collecting public restroom graffiti checks into a hotel in rural Nebraska. It's a cold snowy winter day. For reasons never revealed to the reader, his life is falling apart. He is contemplating suicide, but just before firing the final shot he wonders if publishing a book about his hobby might not be the preferable course of action. The bleak heartland snowscape provides a perfect backdrop for the protagonist's isolated lonely existence. A book that few people will notice is his sole reason for living. It quite likely isn't enough, but on the other hand maybe it is.
