Ms. Tilley delves into history, giving voice to an immigrant girl, Jennie Bosschieter. Her young life in a new land of hope and opportunities were ruthlessly taken by ¨upper class" men who (after facing criminal charges) besmirched her character in effort to save themselves.
A division of classes supporting each side rocked the nation. Quote from the book: ̈The reality depended on the individual experiencing it, but the reaction was the same: a feeling of suppressed wrath and helplessness.¨
Ms. Tilley's insight, analysis of the historical records´ contradicting statements and research, reflect her passion in finding all the facts in this forgotten piece of history. Her ability to weave the story, in a way that the reader can feel emotions as they watch it unfold, is a rare talent. I look forward to her next book!
