First thing's first. Don't listen to the critics panning this film. And don't let Rotten Tomatoes decide what you should or shouldn't watch. This film is a thrill ride and blast. It is hands down the best American-made Godzilla film to date. As someone who was a bit underwhelmed by Godzilla 2014, I can happily say this film improves most of what that film lacked. More monsters, more mayhem, more craziness. This is a fun film, and true love letter to the franchise. There are MANY references and callbacks to the original series that hardcore fans will pick up on, and for newer fans, you still get the treat of seeing some of Toho's most popular monsters in Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. The effects, the fights, the easter eggs, and the tone are all top-notch. It combines the seriousness of 2014, but also has a welcome lighter touch that naturally comes with watching giant monsters fighting each other. It really is like a modern take on the old 60's and 70's installments of the Showa era. Which is a good thing. The action is really breathtaking at times, and all the monsters even have distinct personalities. The music score is amazing, and the themes are a welcome return.
The only issue the movie does have is some of the plot elements and character interaction. I will say that. However, the geekiness and action in the film more than make up for that. It truly stands up to some of the best movies in the franchise and is a worthy present-day representation of Godzilla. Go see this movie. It was a lot of fun, and it truly respects it's fan base, which is more than some other franchises seem to be doing nowadays. THIS is the direction beloved franchises should be going. EMBRACING their fans and past, NOT trying to re-write it. I haven't seen such a lovingly faithful film in a very long time.
