There is a lot I love about tools new album. It feels like an anthology of all of the musical feelings they've put into each of their albums. Each song reminds me of some vibe I've felt at some point during their other albums.
However, there is one major point missing for me in this album, and that's Maynard. I feel like I'm every other TooL album I can sing along with Maynard as he displays his awesome singing chops. But in this album I never felt like I got the chance to sing along to the songs. Even when I did, I felt like Maynard wasn't putting his best foot forward. Where are the big vocal moments like at the end of Vicarious, or the end of Lateralus. Where are the emotion evoking vocals that bring you almost to tears like in wings for Mary.
Not once did I feel an emotional connection to any song. The album showcases the abilities of each band member flawlessly. Danny carry really shows up in each song with amazing drum patterns. But Maynard just wasn't even there.
If tool ever makes another album, I feel like this problem will just repeat itself. For some reason the band is headed in this direction.
I love tool, but I especially love Maynard.
