For me This Week shone a very special spotlight on UK politics across the board which, despite not taking itself too seriously: indeed self- deprecation was a fundamental ingredient of its charm). It was a welcome light-hearted programme on UK politics which in its own inimitable way exposed far more areas of UK politics requiring further public questioning than ostensibly more serious programmes such as Question Time which it usually followed. With the help of its semi-resident guest commentators from all sides, the most illustrious (and informed) surely being Michael (choo-choo) Portillo closely followed by Miranda (she's lovely) Green and Liz (4percent) Kendal. It may have been light hearted but it was politically balanced.
It was a welcome light-hearted anti-dote to other programmes on politics which were often just too polarised to explain and expose the hypocrocy which manifested itself in UK politics during its term on our screens.
Shame on the BBC for axing This Week instead of updating and/or refreshing it (which would have been quite understandable); also for dumbing down Question Time, the programme which it usually followed by appointing a Fiona Bruce as new chairperson who now seems intent on turning it into the Fiona Bruce Show: what embarrassment has she brought to this programme: what a double whammy for the Beeb!!?
