Great crime drama, I thought the quality of the writing in Season 02 more evolved than 01 - extremely well structured, well paced, the characters connected in a very compelling way around an extremely good plot. They had a host of great actors.
Season 01 episodes 01 - 04 were really terrible and I almost quit it but I hate having an opinion about something without fully exhausting it. I found the earlier episodes marred by narrative inconsistencies, poor character development, overworked cliches, and the title "the sinner" not properly melded into the narrative - it was shoddy work.
I feel titles are the shortest summaries of any work and here, to give 1 example, nothing at all explained Cora's mother's unremitting religiosity that was such a burden on her children, when her own sister was a carefree spirit who enjoyed literature without those religious hangups? Did they grow in the same household etc.? Interestingly enough, this very inexplicable religiosity is later used by the writers - to great effect, mind you! - to seek to mold the story into a compelling end and by doing this, this religiosity (which the title is derived from) becomes a mere convenience in lieu of the writers having something important to say about having a childhood with abusive, overbearing religious parents. And I do believe what they had to say - about religion, about terminal illness on children - was important, as evidenced in the last 4 episodes.
From Episode 05 to the Season Finale of Season 01, it really takes a compelling and moving turn with extremely good dialogue. I wasn't expecting that. My most memorable moment was when Cora was in prison and her abusive mother - with her Bible bashing! - came to see her and Cora's parting word was that "I am more free in here than I ever was with you." That was really powerful. Really good and moving crime drama.
