Luhrmann pasted his style onto a narrative that didn’t required it and was not improved by it. He decided what he wanted to do and how he wanted it to look and disregarded the spirit of the source material. Three stars for the acting and for Luhrmann’s obvious reverence for the prose, but only three stars for his grotesque misrepresentation of the gravity and somber elegance of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece, it was a gaudy travesty.
