Cats, the movie!
I have always loved musicals but I have never been an enthusiast, not until Andrew Lloyd Webber's reallity casting TV shows on BBC/BBC America.
I did not know the story that is the basis for the musical Cats, I just new that there was an amazing song in it called "Memory". I had probably heard the song before but Samantha Barks' / Rachel Tucker's, "sing off", of it in Andrew's search for a Nancy for the West End Musical, "Oliver", made it a favorite of mine since. Andrew also had a casting show in Canada, this one he was looking for a Dorothy for his musical, "The Wizard of Oz" and AJ Bridel sang an absolutely mesmerizing interpretation of it.
Back to Cats the movie.
Since I didn't know the story behind Cats I was at a disadvantage at first, I couldn't appreciate what was going on in the beginning. What I could appreciate was it was done beautifully, wonderful music and dance. The movie has an amazing cast, too many to mention here, so Google it. For me, the moment the white cat was let out of the bag, I was hooked on newcomer, Francesca Hayward, she was there from beginning to end and was the young cat who sang with the Glamor Cat, "Jennifer Hudson", "Memory". Their performance was breath taking.
I liked Ian Mckellen"s version of Gus the Theatre Cat, hi performance stood out for me.
I could go on and on, list every wonderful performance but I won't, I wanted to keep this short and sweet. There were no bad performances.
I've heard concern about the trailer and there are some bad reviews. Don't watch the trailer and as far as bad reviews, their writers eith don't like Musicals, musicals made into movies or must have watched something else. I will watch it again!
I wish I knew this before I saw Cats the first time yesterday.
Cats tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make the "Jellicle choice", deciding which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. The musical includes the well-known song "Memory" as sung by Grizabella.
