These people rambling about how awful it is are just completely wrong. $2 a month is not that much to pay, and Google was the one who raised their prices, therefore making it more expensive for them to keep up the site. Secondly, if you just simply put in your email and create an account, you get one free games every 24 hours on any map you want. A common misconception is that you only get to play one map in the free version. No, that's only if you don't make an account on the site. In addition to that, you can also play each Daily Challenge each day without having that game count toward your one game a day. The ads that pop-up in the free (with account) version aren't very intrusive, and an ad for the PRO version only plays every 3 rounds, which is nothing to whine about. People need to research and explore all options of geoguessr and what they offer before giving it a bad review. The free (with account) version is perfectly passable when considering the money they have to give Google each year.
