Wow was this an awful mess of a movie. At the end I thought, what the heck did I watch?
Recco - Skip it, and watch a Baz Luhrmann movie like Moulin Rouge to see how color, kinetic energy, storyline and dazzle all come together.
Pros -
- Margot Robbie gives it everything she's got
Cons -
- Overindulgent debauchery that makes you uncomfortable too many times. We get it, Hollywood can be depraved. Move on. We don't need to be hit over the head with it.
- Too many, uneven characters. If this movie had focused on one character (e.g. Robbie) it would give us something to focus on. Instead, it juggles way too many to a point where we are not rooting for Nellie much because we don't observe her struggles to understand her pain, and others it doesn't do much with. The story of the black jazzman facing racism is such an afterthought that it underlines the point of exclusion rather than highlight it.
- Tobey Maguire's character was just... icky.
