We really wanted to like this movie. We bought our tickets days in advance. The acting was good. The videography was a little off in the beginning. If you donโt know the history of the Osage, much of this story wonโt make sense. So read about head rights and the Osage murders before you go because head rights is not explained. The audience is left in the dark as to who some of the people are. We are only introduced to the uncle King Hale and his nephews Bryan the quiet smart one and Ernest, the dumb one. Who is the family that Hale often refers to? He seems to have no kids or other family. Who are the racist couple at the table when Anna comes in drunk?
The timing seems inconsistent and vague. Mollie and Ernest send their youngest a toddler to live with another couple. They keep their two older children. But Baby Anna dies and they bury an 8 year old. So the older kids should have been about 12 and 14. But when Ernest is arrested his son appears to only be 4 or 5 years old. The audience doesnโt fall in love or care about any of the characters. They just arenโt charismatic or endearing or something. The only warmth comes from the scene of the three sisters talking about their love interests. Cultural nods are not explained like the bride wearing a pseudo marching band uniform instead of a wedding dress, apples placed on coffins, leaving the window open during the rain storm.
The film was just too drawn out. Oppenheimer was long and I never checked my watch. But an hour forty five in we realized it was going to be a long night.
