Amazing story! Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is a realistic, survival and adventure novel. It feels like something like this could happen in real life! The story is about a boy named Brian Robeson who crashes into a lake after the pilot of a plane dies. He learns how to protect himself and build things like weapons and shelters with little to no resources. The only tool he has is a hatchet that his mom gave him for his birthday. Brian has to learn how to find food, keep himself warm and protect himself from wild animals. Brian is a 13-year-old boy. He is going to visit his father who works in the Canadian Oil Fields. Brian’s mom and dad are divorced. I admire Brian for his bravery and his ability to survive in harsh conditions. The book taught me how to make a fire without using friction, which is great! It’s an amazing story and I would definitely read it again! Of course, Brian is my favourite character because he is the one mostly in the story. My favourite part is when he makes the fire because I felt like I was celebrating with him. It's very realistic and I thought I was right there with Brian. The author wrote the story with a lot of detail right down to the mosquitos that bothered Brian. It was great to read how Brian changed in the story growing from a very scared and injured boy to a brave and confident survivor. I would recommend reading this novel to ages 10+. It’s a story about survival and adventure which I think anyone would enjoy reading. The book is well written and exciting.
