I fell in love with Deathnote, the characters, the story, the writing, Deathnote is a anime and manga I am proud to suggest to others. Unfortunately, Netflix decided that if you search for Deathnote, you'll find the anime, and this horrible mess of a film. To me, it seems like they only watched episode one of the anime, or read the first few chapters of the manga, looked up a Wikipedia article of the characters, read the first sentence of each article, and made this mess of a film.
They butchered every character, firstly, it takes place in America, which I think is dumb but whatever, so they obviously made every character American. Light is now Light Tanner, Misa is Mia, and L is still named L. They are all idiots! Which is good for a Misa adaptation but she's an idiot in the wrong way. They made Light and L, the dumbest people alive, which is so sad to see. L, for one, is race swapped, and I don't mind that, it makes sense if you're gonna do it for every character, which they did! What gets me upset is the way L is portrayed, he's more unstable, which is just not L, he panics, acts on emotions, and tries to shoot Light? Light is just a horny teen really, tryna look badass for Mia, which is horrible, it's just not at all like Yagami. Mia, is a maniac, who wants to kill everyone who gets in her way, which isn't that unbelievable for Misa... except it includes Light Tanner. And Ryuk, is the bad guy??? They see the scary shigigami, and were like, "Yup! He's the bad guy, because he's a demon monster!" NO! Light, is the bad guy, he's the manipulative, intelligent, cocky, arrogant, evil protagonist, we root for him to lose, and when he does in the original stories, it's so good. But no, Ryuk and Mia are the bad guys, Light is just a teen who went dumb dumb mode, killed like only 400 people and felt bad when killing innocent people. Back to L, he's my favorite character from the original story, and here, he's the closest to his original counterpart then anyone else. Which uhh, is a very low bar. But then he gets a gun. Just watch Deathnote anime, or Japanese Live Action, or read the manga, or the novel, just don't, don't waste your time on this final destination bull shit.
