Warning: spoilers Quite honestly, I loved this movie. It’s not a perfect film, but the overall movie was really good despite its small imperfections. There are a lot of complaints about the plot twist at the end of her father which I can understand the point of them not really foreshadowing it enough, but I feel like at this point in American film, if a new revelation is shown at the end of a movie, then it would be pretty clear that it would be touched on in the following film, and Maxine‘s father being the priest at the end of X was shown, so at least in my opinion it wasn’t too shocking that he was the villain, however I do definitely think they could have gone more into it. The other complaints I tend to see is that the gore was “too much” or “too cheesy” to which I think people don’t seem to understand that this is literally based in the 80’s, 80’s gore was both too cheesy and too much so I think it was a perfect thing to add quite honestly. Lastly, there are quite a few people that have gotten the plot of Pearl and X mixed up. Pearl is the old woman that is featured in X, she and Maxine are not the same person, so Pearls father dying has nothing to do with Maxine’s father. The complaints of this film personally show how much people have become use to watching films that don’t leave them to think about anything at the end. Especially American cinema has become something that is spoon fed to it’s audience for overly digestible content much like everything else. While it’s okay to not like a movie, I know there are plenty that I’m not a fan of while many others are, I do think that people need to actually think about the films they watch before they hate it just to hate it, or because they don’t understand something and don’t want to put the effort into understanding it. While this isn’t some small indie film, I think that by hating just to hate it does put a damper on the reputation of people that actually put effort into the making of any movie. TLDR: While Maxxxine is not a perfect film, I think that people are kind of lost in the sauce when it comes to consuming media. Maxxxine is a great mix of campy, serious, and cheesy and I look forward to more of what the people that put their effort into making this have to offer.
