I think the book could be just as good without making Dr. E so "amazing"-- contacts in academia, extra smart, tough, observant, adaptable, kind, friendly, strong like an ox. I don't think trying to make her superhuman was necessary. Making her less relatable detracts from her potential humanity with the space of a very small village life.
