This movie showcases that the right amount of pacing, suspense and emotion can really bring a script with little dialogue to life. It really worked for me and I loved Smith in this role. He embodied this character and really put his heart into it. That made it possible to go from seeing beyond Will Smith acting in a film to seeing Robert Neville come to life on the screen through Will Smith's craft. He let the character take the lead and that is what good actors are supposed to do. He transformed and it was believable.
Loved the opening scene in the red Mustang. Great way to basically set the tone of the story without saying anything. Great showing through action and acting instead of just telling. Let the movie speak for itself. Perfect opening.
The script...very intriguing concept and I like that the writers committed to the idea of this being the result of having believed that we found the cure for cancer. Very basic idea that is realistic. Very unexpected results and outcome that could become our reality if we are not careful with scientific advancements. I liked the underlying cautionary tale of it all. This is the results of believing we can play God basically.
I enjoyed the dog as a supporting character and thought it was very fitting to pace the story because the relationship between him and the dog really carried the middle part of the movie. I was buying it and I was invested as a viewer. And what happened to Sam....I was devastated so I know I was all in. Right level of emotion played on that. The right level of build was invested.
I love when storylines have flashbacks that actually cut through the story and add something valuable. This film did just that. You grow with the character and understand his motivations even more through every flashback. Very necessary to bridge that connection.
