I'll admit, I could be biased, because I saw the pilot on YouTube forever ago, and have been eagerly awaiting the day we finally see this show, but it's soooo good. The animation is bright, colorful, and beautiful. The character designs are unique and fun. I loved the songs (especially Loser, Baby), I loved the VAs, the humor. I will say, there's a lot of swearing & sexual references--I watched some of it with my twin who doesn't swear like I do, & I think the language might've thrown her off a little, but I swear a lot, and I really didn't think it was that bad. She might just be a wuss.
Genuinely, I think the biggest fault of the show is just pacing--I was thinking of Steven Universe when I watched it. Like, you know how the ending of Steven Universe felt super rushed, because they were... obviously trying to rush through the ending, and it made the last few episodes fun but severely affected the flow of the season? Like, for example--a character joins the hotel, but their heart isn't in it the way it should be. This is fixed within the same 23-minute episode, and the episode didn't even start with them joining the hotel. They do lampshade that said character didn't even last the day in their endeavors and it was super quick, but I could see it being jarring. This is also just the result of... animation taking a long time, and the season only having eight episodes, so I think it's obvious the crew did the best they could, and I don't think it actually impacted my enjoyment that much.
Flaws aside, it's heartfelt, it's funny, it's IMPECCABLY queer. The main character is bi! Her girlfriend is a flawed and passionate lesbian trying to look out for her and the hotel. Their first patron is a hurting, gay sex worker battling addiction. Genuinely, it feels like Steven Universe, but for a more mature audience. If I could, I think I'd give it more like, four-and-a-half stars because I think so far, the show is just a real good time that the pacing can only impact so much, but I am going to be reccommending the show to all my friends. I'm glad we're getting a second season!! I can't wait to fall further in love with these characters, even the token straight.
