I don’t normally write reviews…. But this book just isn’t good and I had to say something. The characters are dull and lack dimension, and the story is disjointed and lackluster. It reads like a bad fan-fiction. Kind of sad I spent money on it honestly.
Spoiler:
I think what did it for me is some fixes to the plot seem so obvious… for example, in the beginning of the book, when we meet the main character’s family… we’re introduced to incredibly shallow, one-dimensional characters that make her life miserable, and then we’re supposed to believe she’s sad she has to leave home? Her life is terrible and then she’s “forced” to go live a life of luxury. Weird.
The author could have…
1. Given Feyre a much more developed relationship with her mother, who she made a promise to, but there’s never any weight to this promise because we don’t know her mother, and then we don’t care because how can you?
2. Give her a reason to want to STAY home… make the audience feel conflicted and sad about her leaving her family. This means spending a lot more time here and giving life to her human life.
3. Add some stakes… give her REAL consequences for killing a fairie. Maybe she has to go to court and then Tamlin defends her and offers her sanctuary, and there’s a very good reason he chose to do that (like maybe he knew her in a past life or he was fulfilling a major debt or something)
4. There is no real drive to this story. The stakes are so lame (a very vague “blight” that causes magic to malfunction? What.) that unfortunately, I feel like there’s no real drive to keep reading either. :/
