Perfect movie. You have to admit that there's a point that Alexander Payne's filmmaking career showcases throughout its duration. What I mean is that Payne's filmography demonstrates how unpretentious and warm his understanding of cinema is. The point here is that Payne makes films for the audience, not just for himself. His films are character-driven and filled with emotions, humor, and satire in a delightful way. He makes films that we can no longer have, films that rejuvenated the film industry in the 70s and 80s. That's why he is one of the best filmmakers of our time, and of course, "The Holdovers" is also one of the best films of the year.
